11.03 Paralympics: Russia's Lysova Clinches Biathlon Golden Double

KRASNAYA POLYANA, Russia, March 11 (R-Sport) – Russia's domination at the Sochi Paralympics biathlon track continued as Mikhalina Lysova clinched her second gold of the Games on Tuesday.

Lysova dominated a field consisting of just three other competitors as she won the 10km race for visually impaired athletes following her triumph in the 6km event on Saturday.

The podium saw a repeat of Saturday's top three as Lysova's teammate Yulia Budaleeva once again won silver, 27.4 seconds behind Lysova, while bronze went to Ukraine’s Oksana Shyshkova.

The only other athlete in the race was Ukraine's Olga Prylutska.

Visually impaired biathlon sees athletes race with sighted guides. In the shooting portion of the event, athletes used modified rifles that provide aural cues to help them hit the targets.

Earlier in the day, Roman Petushkov, Alexandra Kaufman and Azat Karachurin all won biathlon gold medals for Russia, while Germany's Anja Wicker sped to gold in the women's seated 10km.

The biathlon events use so-called “calculated time,” in which each athlete’s time is modified by a percentage reflecting the extent of their disability.
