28.11 Olympic Flame Visits Site of Russia’s Fatal Dam Accident
SHUSHENSKOYE, Russia, November 27 (R-Sport) – The Olympic flame on Wednesday visited a Siberian dam where an accident killed 75 people in 2009, as part of the latest stage of the torch relay for February’s Winter Games in Sochi.
The disaster at the Sayano-Shushenskaya dam, one of the largest in the world by power-generating capacity, was triggered when a turbine broke apart, flooding the interior of the dam.
The structure has since been partially repaired, with six of the 10 turbines now reportedly functioning.
Later Wednesday, the torch ended the day's stage in the city of Abakan, around 400 kilometers from Russia's border with Mongolia.
The torch relay for the February 7-23 Games started on Red Square in Moscow on October 7. It is to take in all of Russia's 83 regions on its record-breaking 65,000-kilometer trip.
