04.10 Libya Vows to Compensate Russia for Embassy Damage
MOSCOW, October 4 (RIA Novosti) Libya has officially apologized for a mobs attack on the Russian Embassy in Tripoli and said it was ready to pay for all damage sustained in the incident, Russias Foreign Ministry said Friday.
A group of unknown assailants fired shots at the embassy and attempted to break into the building, but they fled the scene after several were killed. Shortly afterward, Russia evacuated the embassys staff and their family members, 52 people.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov on Friday met with Libyas charge daffaires ad interim in Russia, Salem Sahiti.
The Libyan diplomat delivered official apologies and stressed that the Libyan side vigorously condemns this criminal action and is ready to compensate for the damage done to the Russian diplomatic mission in full.
Gatilov, in turn, replied that Moscow expects the Libyan government to take concrete steps as part of its international obligations to investigate this crime, punish those guilty and ensure the necessary security for the Russian diplomatic mission, providing conditions [for the Russian Embassy] to resume its work, the Russian ministry said in a statement.
