04.09 6.5 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes off Japans Coast
MOSCOW, September 4 (RIA Novosti) - A 6.5-magnitude earthquake was registered on Wednesday in the Pacific Ocean to the southeast of Japans coastline, the US Geological Service reported.
According to the service, the quakes epicenter was located some 600 kilometers (373 miles) to the south from Tokyo at the depth of 400 kilometers (almost 250 miles).
There were no reports on casualties or any damages to the infrastructure and meteorologists did not issue a tsunami warning, but tremors were felt in several prefectures of Japan, including in Fukushima.
Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), which operates the Fukushima nuclear power plant, said the plant remained unaffected by the quake.
In March 2011, Japan was hit by a massive magnitude-9.0 earthquake and subsequent tsunami, claiming more than 15,000 lives and causing a number of explosions at the Fukushima plant.
In what has been dubbed the world's worst nuclear disaster after Chernobyl, three of the plants reactors underwent a partial meltdown as radiation leaked into the atmosphere, soil and seawater.
