22.08 RIA Novosti Offers G20 Participants Glimpse of Russian Life
MOSCOW, August 22 (RIA Novosti) - The best photo essays on Russian life, compiled by RIA Novostis art project The Russian Moment, will be presented in St. Petersburg on September 2-8, 2013. The event is timed to coincide with the G20 summit, for which RIA Novosti Group is the official photo host. Visitors to the exhibitions will see exclusive photos by eminent photographers from G20 countries taken during a two-week expedition ahead of the summit. Some of them will give lectures during the exhibitions, and there will also be an international multimedia festival.
Two photo exhibitions will be arranged in the Russian Museums Marble Palace and in the open air in the Alexandrovsky Garden. On Photography Night on September 5, RIA Novosti will host a 3D-mapping show for the public on Palace Square, during which photos taken during the expeditions will be projected onto the fa?ade of the General Staff building.
RIA Novosti photo director Anna Shpakova said: The places we have chosen to display the photos the open space of the Alexandrovsky Garden, the closed space of the Marble Palace and the fa?ade of the General Staff building are meant to illustrate the diversity of Russias spaces.
The main theme of the project is Russians attitudes to the space in which they live. The subjects include stunt performers working in the Moscow Region, a diver from Vladivostok, women from Ivanovo and employees of a biotechnology research institute. All participants of The Russian Moment project presented their own take on modern Russia, seeking to convey to the audience what they saw during their trips. All participating photographers were invited to work in their own styles, making the project very diverse.
American photographer Stanley Greene used his expedition to retrace the route traversed by the writer Anton Chekhov in 1890 to Sakhalin in Russias Far East, and created a black-and-white photo diary of the journey.
The list of places to see and photograph is endless in Russia, and life in one city doesnt always reflect the history of Russia with its ups and downs. For me I discovered the vastness of Russia and the changes sweeping across it, said Greene.
All the photo essays are very different, but they are all about people, Russias spaces and the activities taking place there. Geographically, the project ranges from Sakhalin to Russias western exclave Kaliningrad.
RIA Novosti will present a book of photos taken during the expeditions to guests of the G20 summit.
