25.08 Mubarak, Muslim Brotherhood Chiefs to Face Trial on Same Day
MOSCOW, August 25 (RIA Novosti) - Unrelated court hearings will begin on Sunday for Egypts ex-president Hosni Mubarak and high-ranking officials of the Muslim Brotherhood, Egypts Al-Ahram newspaper said.
Mubarak is charged with ordering to kill civilians in February 2011. Three senior Muslim Brotherhood officials - Supreme Guide Mohammed Badie, his two deputies (Rashad Bayoumi and Khairat Al-Shater) and three group members - are suspected of similar crimes, which took place two years later.
Both Mubarak and Muslim Brotherhood leaders face a death penalty if found guilty.
The hearings will be held in different districts of Cairo to prevent possible disturbances and clashes.
A Cairo court on Wednesday ordered Mubarak, 85, to be freed after two years in detention and placed under house arrest. The former president is being kept in a Cairo military hospital under strict security.
The arrest of Bayoumi and Al-Shater came after the ouster of another Muslim Brotherhood member, ex-president Mohammed Morsi, and massive detentions of Muslim Brotherhood members, which followed the military coup. Badie was placed in custody last week.
