Dagestan's acting president Ramzan Abdulatipov has dismissed the republic's government and appointed former Deputy Prime Minister Anatoly Karibov as acting prime minister. Abdulatipov said he dismissed the government because of its "inefficiency."

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny's "People's Alliance" is to propose RPR-Parnas party leader Boris Nemtsov Monday as a candidate for the mayor elections in the city of Yaroslavl. The previous mayor, who had left the ruling United Russia party and won the ballot against it last year, was arrested earlier this month on corruption charges which the opposition claim were politically motivated.

Two powerful bombs were discovered Monday at the entrance to a Shiite mosque in the North Caucasus republic of Dagestan. The power of the explosive devices, found and defused in the town of Khasavyurt, on the border with Chechnya, was equivalent to 80 kilograms of TNT.
