Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Viktor Yanukovych attended events this weekend to mark the 1025th anniversary of the baptism of Kievan Rus, a medieval state that comprised parts of what is now Russia and Ukraine. On Sunday they headed to Sevastopol to attend a joint naval parade devoted to Navy Day.

Egypt saw its deadliest street protest since the overthrow of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi in early June. According to experts, the country is on the verge of a new civil war. Meanwhile, Egyptian prosecutors issued a 15-day arrest for the deposed leader, who has been kept in an undisclosed location.

The African Swine Fever Virus has triggered a conflict between big pork producers and small farmers. Scrap precious metals worth around $500 million - including 720 kilos of gold have gone missing from a precious metals reprocessing plant in Yekaterinburg. A suspected theft case was started as long ago as 2006, but the investigation has been repeatedly stalled.
